Which Kindle do I have?
Cases are model-specific, and the wrong model is the number one reason people return an e-reader case. Amazon has sold six different Kindle bodies since 2021, and three of them look identical from a metre away. Here is how to tell them apart without a ruler, and what that means for the case you buy.
The fastest way: ask the Kindle
On the device, open Settings (the gear icon at the top), then All Settings → Device Options → Device Info. The screen names the model and its generation, for example Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) or Kindle (11th Generation). That generation number is what case makers mean when they say “fits 12th gen”.
No device at hand? Sign in to Amazon, open Manage Your Content and Devices → Devices. Every Kindle registered to your account is listed with its model name.
Every recent model, by size
If you would rather measure, the body tells you. Width and height decide whether a case fits; a few millimetres matter because the corners of a hard shell are moulded to the exact outline.

Kobo builds the Tolino hardware, which is why a Tolino Shine and a Kobo Clara take the same case. The software is different; the shell is not.
Paperwhite 2021 or 2024: the one that trips everyone
The two Paperwhites look alike. The 2024 model is about 3 mm taller and 3 mm wider, the screen grew from 6.8 to 7 inches, and the bezels are thinner. Some shops claim the 2021 case fits the 2024 device. Soft sleeves might; a moulded folio will not sit right, and the wake magnet may miss. If you bought your Paperwhite before October 2024, it is the 11th generation.
The Colorsoft is the 2024 Paperwhite body with a colour screen. Any case marked “Paperwhite 12th gen” fits it, and vice versa.

Does a Kindle Paperwhite 2024 case fit the Colorsoft?
Yes. The Paperwhite 12th generation and the Colorsoft have the same body, buttons and port, so a case for one fits the other.
Does a Paperwhite 2021 case fit the Paperwhite 2024?
Not reliably. The 2024 body is about 3 mm larger in both directions. A moulded case for the 11th generation will not seat properly on the 12th.
Where do I find my Kindle's generation?
Settings → All Settings → Device Options → Device Info on the device, or Manage Your Content and Devices on Amazon's website.
Is the Tolino Shine the same as the Kobo Clara?
For cases, yes. Tolino devices since 2023 use Kobo hardware, so Shine and Clara share the same shell.
